WALTHAM, Mass. — ImmunoGen,
Inc. (Nasdaq: IMGN), a
biotechnology company that develops targeted anticancer products using
its antibody expertise and Targeted Antibody Payload (TAP) technology,
today announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has
granted orphan drug designation to its IMGN901 compound when used for
the treatment of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). Through a separate
process, the European Union (EU) Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products
(COMP) concurrently also granted IMGN901 orphan medicinal product
designation for the treatment of MCC.

“IMGN901 has shown promising activity among the small number of MCC
patients treated to date, suggesting this is a potential registration
path for the compound,” commented Daniel Junius, President and CEO.
“Metastatic MCC is a rare and highly aggressive cancer with no approved
treatments today. We are preparing to be ready to initiate pivotal
testing of IMGN901 in MCC in 2011 and will make the final decision based
on expanded clinical experience and regulatory input. Gaining orphan
drug designation for IMGN901 in the US and Europe is an important step
in this process.”

Six patients with metastatic MCC had received IMGN901 at the time of the
AACR-NCI-EORTC meeting in November 2009.1 Among these, two
patients had an objective response – including a patient who has had a
sustained complete remission – and a third patient had clinically
meaningful stable disease.

In the US, the Orphan Drug Act is intended to encourage companies to
develop therapies for the treatment of diseases that affect fewer than
200,000 people in this country. Orphan drug designation provides
ImmunoGen with seven years of market exclusivity that begins once
IMGN901 receives FDA marketing approval for the treatment of MCC. It
also provides certain financial incentives that can help support the
development of IMGN901 for MCC.

Similarly, in the EU, orphan medicinal product designation is intended
to encourage companies to develop therapies for life-threatening or
chronically debilitating conditions that affect no more than five in
10,000 people in the EU. Orphan medicinal product designation provides
ImmunoGen with ten years of market exclusivity that begins once IMGN901
receives European approval for MCC. It also enables access to certain
financial incentives as well as to protocol assistance.

* DELAYED-ONSET MUSCLE SORENESS (DOMS) is a double-edged sword. On one hand, muscle damage and soreness promote intracellular repair processes that make your muscles bigger and stronger. Researchers from Australia, Baylor University (Waco, Texas) and Tasmania teamed up to study the effects of creatine monohydrate administered five days before and 14 days after a standardized lower-body resistance-training session (four sets of 10 reps of the eccentric-only leg press, leg extension and leg curl). Five days before exercise, subjects took about 20 grams of creatine and 84 grams of glucose or a placebo. Fourteen days later, they took about 7 grams of creatine and 28 grams of glucose or a placebo. The effects of creatine were dramatic: a 21% greater recovery of strength and 84% less muscle damage compared to the placebo group. This study underscores the importance of daily creatine supplementation, especially on “off” days, to accelerate recovery from intense weight training.
WALTHAM, Mass. — BG Medicine, Inc. today announced that it has entered into an agreement
with Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) to extend its current development
and commercialization collaboration to include the development of a
galectin-3 test for Abbott Point of Care’s i-STAT® System.
Galectin-3 is a novel biomarker that may play a role in detecting the
development and progression of heart failure.

Under the agreement, Abbott will be responsible for the development of
the test in accordance with certain plans and milestones, and BG
Medicine and Abbott will collaborate in support of regulatory filings
and studies to support the clinical utility of galectin-3 in the
management of patients with acute decompensated heart failure.

“Heart failure is one of the most costly medical conditions. Despite
important advances in diagnosis, there remain significant unmet needs in
assessing patients with heart failure and selecting a course of action
both in emergency room and non-acute care settings,” said Pieter

is an important step toward determining the exact role this test can

The operation is still associated with a significant complication rate, morbidity and prolonged convalescence. [1],[2],[3],[4] Complications have included flap necrosis, seroma, haematoma, infections, fat necrosis, dehiscence of wound and delayed healing. There is also a high incidence of aesthetic flaws and need for secondary correction, rates as high as 27.9 % being reported. [1] Extensive undermining causes denervation and reduction in the vascularity of the flap. There is thus an intrinsic design flaw in the traditional operation, namely, a large random pattern skin flap, partly deprived of blood supply and innervation is stretched maximally and sutured under tension. [3],[4] This accounts for ischemia related complications. The lower abdominal skin also remains permanently numb. [5] The traditional technique also results in several lymphatics being divided. Despite routine use of drainage, a high rate of postoperative seroma is still accepted as unavoidable. Despite such high complication rate even the end results may not be always aesthetically pleasing. [6] The problems increase significantly in obese subjects and hence patients are told to lose maximum weight in order to “earn” their abdominoplasty. [7] The best indication for abdominoplasty is still a patient with plenty of loose skin, rectus muscle diastasis and without too much fat in the local area. With the rising incidence of obesity in the world, such patients are rare in todays practice [Figure 1]. Many obese patients are unable to lose weight especially in the abdominal area and hence are denied abdominoplasty. In obese individuals unable to lose weight, a two step approach has been advocated consisting of abdominoplasty followed by liposuction six months later or vice versa. Both approaches are less than ideal. Reducing excess fat in abdominal wall by prior liposuction will induce fibrosis, making subsequent abdominoplasty difficult. Performing abdominoplasty first in these obese patients is associated with more complications and still leaves behind a fatty abdominal wall; subsequent liposuction can cause secondary skin laxity. To circumvent these problems a new operation called Lipoabdominoplasty (LABP) has been practised by the author since 1995 with surprisingly low complication rate. Techniques have been refined over this period and in its present form it has proven to be trouble-free and versatile. Historically the concept of combining liposuction with abdominoplasty seems to have been proposed first by Cardoso de Castro in 1987 [8] with later contributions by several surgeons. [9],[10],[11],[12] However this procedure has not been adopted universally yet. Part of the reason for reluctance is the fear that combining the two operations may be risky as was suggested in earlier writings where the concept of “danger zones” was proposed. [12] Modern LABP is an entirely new operation and is not merely a combination of two procedures; this is important to understand in order to attain efficacy with safety. [13],[14],[15],[16] In this article the author explores the philosophy of this new procedure, laying emphasis on the essential steps for safety to shorten the learning curve. Personal experience with a consecutive series of over 120 mostly obese patients is used to illustrate the points.
INTRODUCTION In the last few decades, abdominoplasty has become an increasingly popular and satisfying method of body contouring (1), (2), (3), (4), (5), (6), (7), (8). Factors that may have contributed to the popularity of abdominoplasty include: the societys emphasis on youthful appearance, increased awareness of self-image and fitness and the growth of aesthetic surgery in general (1). The usual candidates for abdominoplasty are women in their fourth through sixth decades, which had completed their families and left with lax abdominal wall, striae of pregnancy, or scars of previous surgical operations (1), (9). Another group of patients seeking for abdominoplasty among other body contouring procedures are those patients who had successful gastric bypass surgery with massive weight reduction. These patients are left with redundant skin, so abdominoplasty aims to improve post-weight reduction body aesthetics and function (2), (9), (10), (11). Although many investigators have reported on the complications of abdominoplasty (2), (3), (4), (5), (6), (7), (8), (9), (10), (11), (12), (13), (14), (15), (16), (17), (18), (19), (20), the risk factors associated with post abdominoplasty wound complications were not adequately addressed in the literature. Identification of these risk factors is considered a crucial issue for surgeons who perform abdominoplasty. It would help them in accurate patient selection and counseling. In addition, they may consider adopting prophylactic measures against proven risk factors. In this retrospective study we report our experience with 116 consecutive cases of abdominoplasty procedures. The objectives of the study are to report the incidence of post-abdominoplasty wound complications and to assess the influence of different possible risk factors on incidence of these wound complications. Amarillo Biosciences, Inc. (ABI) (OTCBB: AMAR) today announced that it has executed a license and supply agreement with Intas Pharmaceuticals Limited (Intas), one of the top 20 pharmaceutical companies in India. Intas plans to launch a double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 3 clinical trial of ABIs orally administered interferon-alpha lozenges in India by the end of March. The study will include up to 520 patients with clinical signs and symptoms of influenza. Intas will pay ABI a royalty on net sales in India and Nepal after marketing approval is obtained.

The H1N1 virus continues to circulate in India. The objective of the clinical trial planned in India is to determine the safety and efficacy of low dose oral interferon in reducing the severity of infection with influenza viruses such as H1N1. A Phase 2 clinical trial recently completed in Perth, Australia demonstrated that ABIs interferon-alpha lozenges were safe and beneficial when given as prevention against respiratory viruses, including influenza.

In the double-blind study that was conducted in Perth, 200 healthy volunteers were given ABIs low-dose interferon-alpha lozenges or placebo once daily for 16 weeks during the winter cold and flu season in Western Australia. Preliminary analysis has shown that interferon-alpha lozenges were free from adverse effects and led to a shift in symptom severity from moderate to mild. Importantly, prophylactic use of low-dose interferon-alpha lozenges significantly reduced the rate of influenza-like illness in study volunteers ages 55 years and older, who are generally considered to be at high risk for influenza. The company plans to release full study results when serology testing is completed.

“Influenza viruses mutate to evade the effects of anti-viral drugs. Influenza viruses do not mutate to evade interferon, but instead they have a strategy to sabotage the host interferon system. By giving people interferon orally, we believe we can overcome this viral strategy. It is my belief that low-dose oral interferon will be a beneficial therapy of all influenza viruses, not just the H1N1 strain,” said Dr. Joseph M. Cummins, President and CEO of ABI.

DURHAM, N.C. — Argos Therapeutics today announced the publication of a manuscript in
the February edition of Clinical Immunology, detailing positive
immune response, safety and manufacturing data for its AGS-004
immunotherapy for HIV. AGS-004 is a product of the Company’s Arcelis™
technology, and is a personalized, RNA-loaded dendritic cell-based
immunotherapy that is perfectly matched to each patient’s unique HIV
viral burden. The manuscript details a clinical study in which AGS-004
was evaluated in type-1 HIV-infected adults who were being treated with
antiretroviral therapy (ART). The study demonstrated that AGS-004 is
capable of producing a proliferative T cell response to HIV-1 antigens
in patients, with full or partial HIV-specific proliferative immune
responses occurring in 78% of evaluable subjects.

“While ART improves the morbidity and mortality associated with HIV, it
does not improve the immune system’s ability to control HIV replication,
and it is also associated with significant side effects for patients,”
said Principal Investigator Jean-Pierre Routy, M.D., from McGill
University Health Centre in Montreal. “A new treatment strategy is
needed that could potentially limit or delay exposure to ART and its
accompanying side effects, and I believe that an immunotherapeutic
approach may be able to achieve this, through producing or enhancing the
anti-HIV immune responses needed to control viral replication.”

Charles Nicolette, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer and Vice President of
Research and Development of Argos Therapeutics, added, “We are excited
about the Arcelis immunotherapy platform because it is so well suited to
the pathology of HIV infection; it overcomes the viral variability and
the immune suppressive mechanisms that allow the virus to persist
chronically and, remarkably, this is achieved without activation of CD4
T cells, which are known to serve as factories for viral replication.
This current study confirms previous proof-of-concept studies that have
shown that our approach is able to induce a diverse immune response to
HIV in patients.”

AGS-004 is produced from autologous, monocyte-derived dendritic cells
that are electroporated with RNA encoding for CD40L and for HIV antigens
Gag, Nef, Rev, and Vpr, derived from each patient’s pre-ART plasma. Data
from this study show that four patients demonstrated increases in T cell
proliferation specific to the four HIV antigens used in AGS-004, which
met the criteria for a full response; three additional subjects
demonstrated increases that represented partial responses to AGS-004
therapy. Importantly, HIV viral load was undetectable at baseline and
throughout the duration of the study for all subjects.

Reported adverse events were all mild in nature, with no evidence of
autoimmunity, and no significant changes in absolute CD4 and CD8 cell
counts were observed. No subjects discontinued the study due to any
adverse event. The study also demonstrated the manufacturing feasibility
of AGS-004, which was produced according to current Good Manufacturing
Procedures, with AGS-004 being produced within a mean of 6 weeks and
yielding 4-12 doses per patient.

The 2009 American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation Annual Meeting OTO EXPO, held this year in San Diego, was the site of a presentation of research conducted at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston which found a protective effect for the B vitamin folate against the development of hearing loss in older men.* Over the course of the follow-up, 3,559 men developed hearing loss. Although no association was noted between the condition and other vitamin intake, men over 60 whose intake of folate from food and supplements was among the highest 20% of participants had a 21% reduction in the risk of developing hearing loss compared with those in the lowest fifth. The intake of alcohol, which can impede the bioavailability of folate, did not impact the relationship observed between folate intake and hearing loss, however, men whose alcohol intake was highest had a reduced risk of hearing loss with greater vitamin B12 intake. The investigation is the first large epidemiologic study to prospectively examine the relation between diet and hearing loss. “The association between folate intake and incident hearing loss in our cohort is consistent with previous data showing that folic acid supplementation slowed the decline in low frequency hearing in older adults,” the authors write. “A possible explanation for the impact of age on the relation between folate intake and hearing loss is the increased prevalence of folate malabsorption and folate depletion in the older age group. Higher folic acid intake may be necessary to meet the optimal folate needs in this age group.”

Deduction Qualifications Eased for 2009 with National Relief Program

LOS ANGELES — An often-overlooked deduction may help turn a major property-casualty
loss into a tax time gain. The standard deduction for unreimbursed
casualty and theft losses allows taxpayers to include certain uninsured
property losses among their itemized deductions.

In the past, qualifying for the disaster loss deduction meant that the
taxpayer had to have sustained substantial financial losses. Insurance
deductibles or gaps in insurance coverage — from fire, flooding or
earthquake, for example — could qualify for tax deductions.

For a short time, however, homeowners with losses from any federally-declared
disaster may also qualify for additional benefits under federal
legislation available only for the 2008 and 2009 tax years. The National
Disaster Relief Act of 2008 allows all taxpayers, not just those who
itemize, to claim a deduction for catastrophe losses regardless of their
income level. The legislation also eliminates the requirement that
taxpayers qualify for the deduction only if the disaster loss exceeds 10
percent of their adjusted gross income, plus $500. If the property is a
trade or a business, slightly different rules may apply, so it’s
important to seek assistance from a qualified tax preparer.

In between, tornados , floods and massive snowstorms have caused the loss of lives and massive property damage . According to scientists who study global warming, these are just a few of the natural disasters predicted in the years ahead. While we may not be able to stop disasters from occurring, disaster recovery expert Steve Slepcevic says better preparation will help us survive and recover.

Preparation of a Family Communication Plan is key to surviving any disaster. Says Slepcevic, “In the plan, list who to contact in the event of an emergency and ways to do so should normal communications be disrupted or family members get separated. In addition, each family member should have a 5-day Disaster Kit for their vehicle with food, water, clothing and additional emergency supplies.”

Additionally, he recommends that every family draw up an Emergency Evacuation Plan with a location to meet outside the city limits, should roads become inaccessible or their home become uninhabitable. They should also designate an emergency phone number for messages to be left every 4 to 8 hours, as needed.

Refractive surgery, mainly laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), is widely used to correct refractive errors, mainly myopia. It consists of producing a corneal flap, ablating the underlying corneal stroma using laser energy, and repositioning the flap without suturing it to the underlying stroma. Under local sub-conjunctival anaesthesia the flap was irrigated, cleaned, repositioned and sutured. Methylprednisolone and gentamicin were injected subconjunctivally, and the eye was closed for 24 hours. The following day the eye was quiet with a visual acuity of 6/9 and the subsequent course was uneventful. After a LASIK procedure the flap adheres to the corneal stroma because of the action of the endothelial pump and because the epithelium grows over the flaps margin. Scarring and fibrosis occur only at the flaps margin. (1) Early and late complications are mainly haloes, glare, star-burst and dry eye. A dreaded complication is corneal ectasia. (2)
